Lake Light Sculpture 2012 Postponed

The Lake Light Sculpture Committee has made the very difficult decision to postpone the 2012 event due to flooding of the Lake Jindabyne foreshore. Consequently, we will not be able to use the path along the foreshore at Easter this year, which leaves us without a venue. The Committee wishes to reassure our artists, sponsors, and those dedicated to the arts that this is not the end of Lake Light Sculpture; the event is merely being placed on hold until Easter 2013. We hope all artists will consider re-entering their sculptures in 2013.
Options for Display:
The Jindabyne Lions Club Art Show has offered to accommodate artists and groups still wishing to display their sculptures this Easter. The Jindabyne Lions Club hosts an art show at the Jindabyne Memorial Hall each Easter. They are happy to exhibit smaller works – sculpture and otherwise. Entry forms are available at www.jindabynelions.org.au. Questions should be directed to Terry Chalk on 02 64571226.
Local businesses have also expressed an interest in displaying specific types of sculptures. Artists will be emailed with these options when these details have been compiled.
Artist Entry Refunds:
All artists/entrants who have already submitted payment will be refunded as soon as possible. We thank you sincerely for your dedication to the event, and would like assist in connecting you with other opportunities to display your work in Jindabyne during Easter.
Flood Event:
The copious amounts of rain during March brought both relief from many years of drought and caused a great deal of damage in the Snowy River and surrounding Shires. The sheer volume of water entering our streams and rivers has resulted in flooding on Lake Jindabyne. Our usual site, which extends from Banjo Paterson Park to the Jindabyne Caravan Park, has been rendered unusable by this flood event. The water inundation, which has also caused the pedestrian lighting to be turned off, means the safety of both artists and the public is a major concern.
Considerations:
The committee would like to reassure everyone that every possible option was considered to avoid postponing the event for this year. The event received much support and many generous offers from the community and local businesses. We spent a great deal of time exploring the option of relocating the event to another venue. After engaging in much discussion and seeking advice from different parts of the community, unfortunately, it was decided that the obstacles could not be satisfactorily overcome in the time remaining. The committee concluded that the “Lake Light experience” – particularly the sense of discovery visitors enjoy while walking along the Lake Jindabyne foreshore in the shadow of the Snowy Mountains – is pivotal to the event and we are now working to make 2013 bigger and better.
The Lake Light Sculpture Committee would once again like to thank you all for your understanding, support and patience in this matter. Please do not hesitate to contact the committee (info@lakelightsculpture.org) if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas. We look forward to seeing you at Lake Light Sculpture 2013.
